Your guide to the Cloverfield hints…

You gotta hand it to JJ Abrams and crew… they’ve already got filmnuts OBSESSED with the Cloverfield project.

Two new sites are up: the first is a blogspot blog, titled The Truth of Ethan Haas. That one is just text, denouncing the teachings and followers of a “prophet” named Ethan Haas. The site’s author is named “The Mezin Source.” Here’s an excerpt:

It has come to our attention that the blasphemy of Van Mantra is spreading across the globe.

His prophet Ethan Haas was nothing more than a raving lunatic long forgotten by history.

Mantra’s website EthanHaasWasRight is a foolish attempt to capture the short attention of today’s youth in an attempt to breath new life into the visions of a long dead fool.

We will do our best to counter this filth and steer humanity back to it’s proper course.

That one links to a second web site, Ethan Haas Was Right. This one is a series of flash puzzles that, when decoded, open up some teaser videos.

The first puzzle is a simple memory game. Memorize the sequence of the shifting cubes, then click through them in that order.

This leads you to the first video, where a guy in a baseball cap named Van talks a little about the prophecies of Ethan Haas, and issues us a mission:

My name is Van. I have the writings of Ethan Haas here. I thought it was just some old story, but then it began to sound like he’d actually seen the future… everything up to now has happened exactly as he said it would. And then there’s his predictions of the future. So many people die.

You were able to find this message; you’re one of us, so you must know what needs to be done. But to be sure I have to test you. You need to find others and help us try to stop it. You must send them here to prove that they’re one of us. We’ve already started, but we’re not strong enough. We only have until August 1st to recruit (indecipherable). Now, trust Haas for the answer.

Now, if you click the blue star in the distance, your email client opens, with an address and a subject line. Send this email, and this is what you’ll get back:

If you’re receiving this auto-response message it means that I’ve gone into hiding. You should be careful now, too. They’re likely to start coming after all of us in an attempt to keep the balance of power in their favor. But remember, as our numbers increase as a group, the weaker they’ll become.

As you recruit new people to our cause, you might need to share this message as guidance for how to navigate the 5 locks to the key code…

1) The first lock will test your memory. Follow the trail of light and sound, but be careful — one wrong move will send you back to the beginning.

2) For the second lock, you may need to look to the stars. They will help you find HAAS who will lead your way.

3) The third lock will require you to extinguish all lights but one. Only with one light remaining will you be able to proceed.

4) The fourth lock will let you move all 4 pieces through the control of one. However, unless the three key pieces are simultaneously placed into position, you will not be granted access.

5) The fifth lock will be the toughest. Seek help again from the stars to reveal your key and the message that you must decode. The two working together will open the way.

The second puzzle is a decoder. Run your mouse over the stars- one of them will illuminate an alphabet in the sky that corresponds with the puzzle. You need to enter in the four letter code word: HAAS. So find the symbols that correspond to H and A, and enter them in the inner rings. In the outer rings, find the symbol pair corresponding to A and S. This opens a new video from Van, here’s what it says:

The signs have already started to show themselves, they have been for years. But when money is more important than saving lives to the ones who have the power to stop it, why would they want to hear the truth? Our ways have brought this upon ourselves. And this is just the beginning. This world is going to change, one way or another; it’s inevitable, you know this. But there’s help out there for us. Now I’ll make a single point to find it. Challenge those who know before it’s too late.

Now we’re on to puzzle 3. Before we start, we see the New York skyline has been decimated. Yikes. Now I had a pretty tough time with it. Basically, it’s a sequential string game. Each time you move a light on the puzzle, another light goes out. The key is to not “strand”any lights. As you move the lights, you’ll be able to click them into place when you see them turn green– but again, don’t strand any… all lights have to have one light connected to them. Once you move them in the proper order, you’ll get a new video. Here’s the transcript:

We are blinded by our own selfish interests. Our wars are taking the lives of those we’ll need for the bigger battle ahead. Intolerance, oppression, poverty, and poor education are killing those that could help defend the world. The media is failing us in exchange for ratings. Of course, no one can see what we see. The destruction will be unlike anything the world has ever seen. The more of us that survive, the better our chances. But now, a group of us carefully positioned in unison, can unlock the way to a new fate (faith). You must get others here, or this will all be for nothing. You’ll see.

The next game is a robot game. You control the blue button,and the green buttons move in opposition to it. You need to position the green buttons over the gear-shaped devices. Clear enough? Yeah, this one took me a while, too, but once you understand the opposition of the buttons, it’s not too hard.

That opens up this video message:

The stars begin to rain down. The few survivors will think there’s safety in the cities. But they won’t know what you and I know. Only then it will it really be the beginning of the end. When they finally show themselves, and shock what’s left of the old world, where we stand in the new hierarchy will be up to us, and what we do today. This will be the final and most challenging of all things that have come. We won’t have time for any more games after this, only the truth. Now, the more that we are in the same place at the same time, the more we will all see: we must organize before it’s too late.

Also (important) during this video, the number 54312 flashes across the screen.

Whew.. okay, now we’re on to the final puzzle. Man, this a tough little fucker… time consuming, too. Arggh. Basically, that strange alphabet is sending a message. You need to use that number, 54312, to get a handle on the terms, and then translate the message into that lower box. Once you have the letters (no easy task), it becomes a pretty simple word scramble game. The trick here is not getting too hung up on the individual messages, and putting them all together in one. When you do that, they spell out THE BEGINNING IS THE END…. well, or “The Beginning is the End,” but noooo… they didn’t like that one… assholes.

Positive Visions end here. What happens next is completely up to you. You’ve unlocked the key code that will bring you reward for your dedication to our cause. But it will first to start to be of value on August 1st. And you will only have 30 days to use it. Take note of this code. It will help get your preparations underway for the new world that you’re now a part of, whether you like it or not. But role you will play, and how you live or die, is completely up to you. It begins August 1st. We will meet back here on that date.

So, there you have it. As complete a walkthrough of the Cloverfield hints as I could bring you. Pretty impressive suff, though I gotta hope this is the last of the puzzles. This stuff gives me headaches.

What does it all mean? Who knows, but it definitely looks interesting. I’d love to hear some more hints, tips, and secrets in the comments. I should have more later. Apparently there’s some other stuff out people are still finding.
